Services We Don't Offer at Uncanny Animals (and Why!)

At Uncanny Animals, your pet’s health, safety, and comfort are always our top priority. While our team are trained animal-care professionals, there are certain procedures that we do not do and recommend to be carried out by a licensed veterinarian.

Across Australia and internationally, veterinary associations advise that groomers do not perform ear hair plucking, anal gland expression, or teeth brushing. These procedures are considered medical in nature, requiring both proper diagnostic training and a sterile environment to avoid risk of harm.

EAR PLUCKING

Reasons we don’t Ear Pluck:

  • Veterinary dermatologists recommend against routine plucking.
  • Removing ear hair can cause pain and we do not have the means to provide appropriate pain relief
  • Can cause irritation or micro-trauma to the delicate ear canal which can lead to further short and long term problems
  • It may also increase the risk of infection particularly as follicles are opened
  • Often there are underlying issues needing addressing e.g. ear infections
  • Risk of ear flapping causing hematoma

ANAL GLAND EXPRESSION

Reasons we don’t do Anal Glands:

  • Traditionally groomers only squeezed externally, but they should be done internally to be emptied properly
  • Squeezing them incorrectly can cause pain, trauma, or even rupture, leading to serious medical complications.
  • Persistent anal gland issues are often a sign of underlying conditions (such as allergies, diet, or infection) that only a vet can diagnose and treat safely.

TEETH BRUSHING

Reasons we don’t do Teeth Brushing:

  • Effective dental care goes beyond surface cleaning. Brushing is only useful if done regularly at home with proper training.
  • In a salon setting, tooth brushing can spread bacteria if not performed under sterile conditions.
  • If your pet already has dental disease, brushing can cause pain, bleeding, or worsen gum infection. A veterinarian can provide professional dental scaling and check for problems beneath the gumline.

OUR COMMITMENT

We are more than happy to:

  • Spot potential concerns (e.g. odour, redness, swelling, or tartar).
  • Recommend you seek veterinary care if we notice something unusual.
  • Provide relevant grooming care such has taking fur short around the ear, mouth and hygiene area to provide easier accessibility to these areas.
